We now have a policy with TVNZ for titles they own and have rights to. As part of our relationship we have been able to access the TVNZ archives. This week I managed to get a sneak peak of some of the titles we have been looking for. It is such an amazing facility at Avalon and their researchers got together a great collection of work for us to assess from our wish list.

Some of the classic shows we are seeking also feature on TVNZ On Demand - NZ On Screen will present a different context around each show with profiles of key cast and crew and discuss their significance to screen history in NZ.

As we seek to clear rights for use from producers, musicians and all the other people who have an interest in work from the past, we are discovering that each title has a life of its own. It’s a massive project, but as we start to uncover some little gems, it results in some great surprises and magic moments along the way.

Last week we had a gathering of all our freelance writers. The writers have been commissioned to write synopses and unique perspectives on each of the titles in the site.

It was an opportunity for some of them to meet each other for the first time and also to get acquainted with Paul, the new editor. We also welcomed a new writers to the group, Debbie Martin, Makerita Urale and Tony Hiles. Other writers who have worked with us since February are Costa Botes, Mary Jane Duffy, Karen Nobes, Rachel Davies, Monika Ahuriri, Mihi (Midge) Murray, Richard King, Annie Simon and Michelle Scullion.

Today we also spent more hours at The Dominion Post scanning photos from their archive. As an example of some of the fantastic material that is in there, here is a photo of the ‘mobile news’ trucks in 1976. The back ground to the photo is that Muldoon wouldn’t go out to Avalon studios to be interviewed for ‘Eye Witness’ a current affairs programme. According to one of Mr Muldoon’s Press officers “This would have taken two hours of the Prime Minister’s time and he is too busy for that”

So they took all the equipment to the Beehive to do the show instead.

Today Debbie, Sam, Kylie, and Clare visited The Dominion Post photographic library - who have kindly given us access to some of their photograph archive so that we can include photos on the NZ On Screen site.
(Thank you to The Dom…and especially Sarah Bartel and Lance Gunderson who tolerate our presence in their domain…).

note the returning stars...

We uncovered some magical photos to add to our collection - it was a bit of a blast from the past seeing presenters we’d forgotten about or actors in their early days of their careers. The photos bring together the people, the technology and the teams that have created great entertainment in New Zealand for many many years.
