At Webstock 09 last week Russell Brown of Public Address and Media 7 fame, talked about television and video content on the web, and who’s getting it right.

Apparently we are!  Particularly when it comes to not geo-locking content, and as a preface to that I imagine wading through the quagmire of copyright clearances, NZ On Screen and RadioNZ were cited as the few that have taken the right approach – compared to TVNZ OnDemand, Hulu and even the revered BBC iPlayer.

Russell also praised the quality of our video and the general awesomeness of the site. It was great to hear, particularly in the esteemed company of Webstock 09 attendees.

The following titles and profiles have been added to NZ On Screen over the last couple of weeks:

Te Po Uriuri
(2001) Short Film
Awatea, a young warrior, is enraged when his lover Te Po, a high-born chief’s daughter, enters an arranged marriage. Retribution is swift and brutal. Set in the late 16th century and based on a Shakespeare sonnet (“my love is as a fever, longing still”), the storytelling of Te Po Uriuri is visceral, and suitably mythic in style. Rurus hoot; bloody patu gleam and bodies and the oily black of the night are vividly shot by Waka Attewell. Directed by Toby Mills and filmed in te reo, it was selected for the Hamburg International Film Festival.

Acquiring material for NZ On Screen in full length is always a tricky issue. In many cases programmes or films are still available commercially and producers feel that having them available online is jeopardising their opportunities for sales.

It is NZ On Screen’s approach that if something is available for sale on DVD or to download or pay per view somewhere, then we will link directly to that site whenever possible.

However we also feel that watching something online and choosing to purchase the DVD are not necessarily opposing behaviours. In fact often having just a short clip online can be more frustrating to a viewer than incentivising them to buy.

Although recently described as “television tapas”, it is certainly the aim of NZ On Screen to bring you as much full length content as possible – heading more for the 3 course meal approach to online viewing!

In this fascinating presentation by Tiffany Shlain, she confirms that when her film was available online to view for free, sales through iTunes and other avenues were higher than they’d ever expected. In a period of taking the film offline, sales plummeted.

Food for thought for our content providers!
